There are downtown neighborhoods that were designed to look creative, and there are neighborhoods that actually are. The Superior Arts District is the second kind — Cleveland’s original arts quarter, built by artists who moved into empty garment factories decades before “loft living” became a marketing phrase. 2125 Superior is right in the middle of it.
Cleveland’s oldest arts district
The district runs roughly eight blocks along Superior Avenue — from Payne to St. Clair, between East 18th and East 26th — inside the larger Campus District. A century ago this was the center of Cleveland’s garment industry, a manufacturing hub second only to New York City. When that industry faded, the wide-open factory floors, tall windows, and heavy timber and steel structures became exactly what working artists wanted: big, cheap, light-filled space.
By the 1990s the area had become Cleveland’s first true live/work artist community. Buildings like the Tower Press Building — often cited as the city’s first live-work loft conversion — and the ArtCraft Building filled with studios. Today the neighborhood is home to well over a hundred working artists, along with galleries, printmakers, recording studios, and creative businesses.

Step out the door and you’re among the institutions that give the district its name:
- Galleries & studios — The Galleries at Cleveland State University, Zygote Press (a nationally known printmaking studio), ARTneo, and Bonfoey Gallery are all part of the surrounding creative fabric.
- Performance & events — venues like RED Space and Assembly for the Arts host shows, markets, and gatherings; Tri-C JazzFest brings live music to the corridor each year.
- Live/work heritage — Superior Sound and Lake Affect Studios continue the tradition of makers working where they live.
- The Green Goat — an organic café & bar right in the lobby of 2125 Superior, so your ground floor is part of the neighborhood, too.
A real neighborhood, looked after
In 2017 the area formally organized as the Superior Arts Business Improvement District, funding street maintenance, safety ambassadors, and added patrols. The result is a creative neighborhood with the everyday upkeep and presence that make it comfortable to actually live in — not just visit.
Central to everything
The arts district’s location is quietly one of its best features. Cleveland State University sits one block south along Euclid Avenue. The RTA HealthLine — the bus rapid transit that runs the length of Euclid — is a block away, connecting you to Public Square in one direction and University Circle and the Cleveland Clinic in the other.
